All around the Transfer Tavern, West Ham fans have been shaking their heads in disbelief, to the fact that their star man Dimitri Payet has been ignored by France head coach Didier Deschamps so far this season.
The 28-year old attacking midfielder has performed well since his move to London from Marseille in the summer, scoring four goals and assisting three others this season but is yet to get a call up to the French national squad.
Payet has already won 15 international caps for France but is shocked by how little attention he is getting from Deschamps.
He said in the Evening Standard: “I feel as if it is an injustice. It is more than a year now that I am in the best form of my career, even if I can still get better. So, for me, it is unjust not to be in the France squad.
“I do not understand what is expected of me. But not to be called up for France does not stop me from living.
“Even if I think about it, I am not in front of the TV waiting for the list. I am in a dream today in England. The national team, if it will only make me unhappy, then I do not want it.
“Perhaps it is my fault because I have not done what is expected of me, but maybe there is more to it. He [Deschamps] has the choice to make, he thinks about the group as a whole.”
West Ham fans here in the Tavern are shocked to hear that their star man is not in the France squad, but his absence can only be a good thing for the Hammers in the long run, as they aim to continue their excellent start to the Premier League season.
Slaven Bilic’s side have already beaten Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City away in the league and six in a very comfortable sixth position in the table, and our landlord feels they have definitely stepped up a level this season!
