Our West Ham fans here in the Transfer Tavern have been far from happy with what has happened this season and you can understand why.
Things really have gone badly this season but the club are at least looking likely to stay in the division so at least they can move onto next year still in the top flight.
The summer, then, is going to be crucial for the Hammers – perhaps more so than most – as they look to demonstrate to an unhappy fan-base that their ambition is still unwavered.
Indeed, we’ve seen recently that in a bid to underline said ambition, Hammers boss Slaven Bilic has revealed his admiration for Daniel Sturridge – as quoted by The Telegraph – sparking talk of a potential move.
For sure, this would suggest the club is going to go for it in the window but, in the case of Sturridge, wouldn’t they actually be better off going for – for want of a better term – a less ambitious signing?
Who could that be? You may ask and the answer, perhaps controversially, is Jermain Defoe.
Of course, some Hammers fans can’t forgive him for the way he left the club over a decade ago but if he started scoring goals regularly – something the club hasn’t got from Andy Carroll or the like – that may just be forgotten.
Indeed, Defoe has kept himself fit and, despite Sturridge having more left in his career years wise, he doesn’t have much certainty over game-time thanks to his fitness.
Defoe, meanwhile, is in tip-top shape and whilst he may not command the fee or fanfare of a Sturridge arrival, he’s more likely to deliver and that is what Hammers fans, like all supporters, want most of all for their club.
