As quoted by The London Evening Standard, West Ham boss Slaven Bilic has played down the rumours that Dimitri Payet could leave the club in January, with our resident Hammers fans here in the Transfer Tavern hoping he is right.
The Frenchman was the club’s best player by a mile last season as he shone on the way to helping the club reach seventh place in the Premier League and many felt that he could move in the summer but he decided to stay in east London.
Since, though, despite some flashes of sheer brilliance, he has struggled a bit in trying to leave his mark on games as the Hammers have floundered and flirted with the relegation zone for the duration of the campaign up to now.
That, and the fact Payet would not rule out a move away from the club in January led to many to naturally speculate about his imminent future but Bilic does not seem too bothered by it all.
Ahead of their London derby against Tottenham this weekend the Croatian said on the situation: “I read it but he said nothing major. He said he didn’t want to close the door to something, he didn’t say ‘I want to leave’ in January or June or whatever so let’s not make a big issue.
”I’m quite relaxed. We are not going to talk about it particularly but with every big player there are a lot of rumours and interest. So I don’t have to talk to him about it.”
The Hammers are currently just a point above the bottom three ahead of their trip to White Hart Lane as Spurs look to reinvigorate their title challenge.
While his recent comments didn’t go down too well amongst the east London locals propping up the bar, there’s little doubt those in the Tavern would be in sour spirits if the Les Blues ace did decide to up and leave.
