David Moyes could ensure West Ham’s survival with risky £2.7m-rated free agent

The West Ham United fans believe they have enough quality in their side to ensure they will beat the drop this season, but recent reports emerging from China have given them reason to believe that Moyes should make one final signing to increase the depth of his attacking options.

David Moyes has increased the clubs potency in front of goal since his arrival due to his decision to deploy Marko Arnautovic in a central role at the spearhead of The Hammers attack. Chicharito was brought to the club at the start of the season to lead the line, and although he has made a big improvement of late, the Mexican has struggled to impress on his return to the Premier League.

Evidently, Moyes has two strong options in attacking positions, but with only ten fixtures left to ensure his club beat the drop this season, he would be wise to consider signing Jackson Martinez (valued at £2.7 million by Transfermarkt) on a free transfer. The Colombian international has recently been released by Chinese Super League side GZ Evergrande after an unsuccessful two year spell with the club in which he only made 10 league appearances following a big-money transfer from Atletico Madrid.

Martinez built his reputation in Liga Nos for Porto by scoring 67 goals in 90 appearances for the club. Since departing the Portugueuse giants for Atletico and GZ Evergrande respectively, his career has taken a notable downturn. At 31-year-old, Martinez is running out of time to prove himself in European football, but a move to West Ham would provide him with one final opportunity to showcase his goal-scoring abilities.

Signing Martinez would undoubtedly be a risk for The Hammers due to his failure to produce the form he demonstrated at Porto since departing from the club in the summer of 2015, but considering he is available on a free transfer it would certainly be a risk worth taking at this stage in the season.

Moyes cannot continue to rely solely on Arnautovic to score the goals needed to win matches this season, and considering the inconsistency of Chicharito’s form this season, he should do everything he can to bolster his options by signing Martinez as soon as possible.
