Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa; how lucky West Ham United were to miss out on him!
According to a report by the London Evening Standard, the Hammers failed with a late attempt to sign him from Olympique de Marseille last summer as Fulham managed to seal a £22.3million deal for him (BBC), although the Standard claim it was worth £30m, so who knows…
But, what we do all know, is that it would look as though it was a huge bullet that they dodged and the best £22.3m/£30m they never spent.
The Cameroon international failed to live up to expectations with Fulham in the Premier League and looked well out of his depth when handed a chance to impress in the first-team, despite having been arguably one of the club’s most exciting additions that summer.
The 23-year-old was continuously made to look like a weak link at Craven Cottage this season and did not produce anything of note in the 22 top-flight appearances he made.
An ankle injury saw Anguissa miss the majority of December and the whole of January, as Fulham struggled to put points on the board.
The midfielder became a key player for Scott Parker, playing almost every minute of the games that he was available to feature in, however, he left very few in the stands with a positive impression and could be considered one of the flops of the season.
He failed to score a goal, or even provide his team-mates with an assist; although that is hardly surprising when you consider he made created just seven opportunities for his colleagues to score from (Squawka).
West Ham may have had their injury concerns in the first half of the season with the likes of Carlos Sanchez and Jack Wilshere both being made unavailable at times, however, Anguissa hardly made himself someone that the club would have regretted missing out on.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing and West Ham (and perhaps even Marseille) will be laughing about the deal.
