West Ham supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side comfortably dispatch of fellow Premier League strugglers Southampton 3-0 at the London Stadium on Saturday to move five points clear of danger.
David Moyes’ men were stuck in a rut prior to their meeting with the South Coast outfit having lost four of their preceding five league games, a run which saw them slip to 17th in the division ahead of Saturday’s clash. Yet the Hammers produced an excellent performance at the London Stadium as a brace from Marko Arnautovic alongside a Joao Mario strike clinched a routine victory for the East London club, in turn moving them up to 14th place in the division with just seven matches of the season to play.
As such, there have been several delighted West Ham fans in the Tavern in recent times, many of whom are sincerely hoping that Saturday’s win can be the catalyst for a run of form which preserves their Premier League status.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Hammers supporters to discuss, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.
And while the 25-year-old would be a useful addition to Moyes’ squad, they should forget about a move for the Cottagers ace, and instead focus their efforts on luring £13.5 million-rated star Fraser Forster (as per Transfermarkt) to the London Stadium this summer.
Ultimately, the England international has endured a tricky campaign at Southampton, having been guilty of making costly errors between the sticks for the Saints in the first half of the season, to the point that he lost his place to Alex McCarthy back in December.
And, as of yet, the 29-year-old has not reclaimed his status as the club’s number one goalkeeper, and as such he could well be on the lookout for a move away from St Mary’s this summer, especially if the Saints lose their Premier League status.
And West Ham could be the perfect destination for the English star to reignite his career.
The Hammers themselves have had issues in the shot-stopping department this season, with Joe Hart beginning the campaign between the sticks before losing out to Adrian, who has since been dropped by Moyes in favour of the England international once again.
Thus, it’s clear that there are issues that need sorting at the London Stadium regarding the goalkeeping ranks, and while Forster has hardly convinced for Southampton in recent times, it’s worth remembering that the 29-year-old was capped three times by England less than two years ago, and as such may just need a fresh start to return to his best form.
And Moyes’ West Ham could give him that opportunity to shine once again with a move this summer, so they should thus forget about a move for Bettinelli and instead focus their efforts on luring Forster to the London Stadium.
