West Ham supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been digesting the news that Manuel Pellegrini has replaced David Moyes as the club’s new manager ahead of the 2018/19 season.
Former Everton and Manchester United chief Moyes was drafted in by the Hammers hierarchy back in November following the sacking of Slaven Bilic, and did the job asked of him in keeping the club in the Premier League courtesy of a 13th place finish. However, his contract wasn’t extended at the end of the season, and the East London outfit will instead by led by ex-Manchester City chief Pellegrini, who of course led the Citizens to the title back in 2014, and indeed sealed two League Cup triumphs during his time at the Etihad Stadium.
And many of our resident West Ham fans are speculating upon who the Chilean could seek to sign ahead of the new season, which means they are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking their club with a move for Reims goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United are also thought to be keen on the 26-year-old shot-stopper, although based on the likelihood for greater first team opportunities at the London Stadium, he should forget about St James’ Park and opt for Pellegrini’s West Ham instead.
Ultimately, the Hammers have struggled greatly in the goalkeeping department this season, what with neither Joe Hart nor Adrian doing enough to convince of their credentials between the sticks.
As such, England international Hart has returned to parent club Manchester City, with the Hammers opting against making a permanent move for the 31-year-old, leaving the unconvincing Adrian as the only senior shot-stopper at the London Stadium.
And given he didn’t produce his best form last season when given the nod by former boss Moyes, it’s clear that a new goalkeeper is needed at the club this summer, which is why Mendy should seek a move to East London.
The 26-year-old has enjoyed a fine season at Ligue 2 side Reims in keeping 18 clean sheets and shipping just 22 goals in 34 appearances for the club, thus playing an integral part in their promotion to the French top-flight.
And with the Guinea-Bissau international reportedly one the most ‘under-rated’ goalkeepers in France, he could surely do a job for West Ham in their bid to move up the division under Pellegrini next term.
And the Hammers look to be a better option for Mendy, what with Benitez eyeing a summer move for Martin Dubravka, who of course excelled on loan for the Magpies in the second half of the season.
And were the North East heavyweights to indeed lure the Slovakia international back to St James’ Park permanently, he would likely be Benitez’s undisputed number one, leaving Mendy with the prospect of a season on the bench.
Yet first team football is without doubt likelier at West Ham given their goalkeeping woes, which is why the £900,000-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) should opt for East London over the North East this summer.
