West Ham picked up their first win since September with a 4-2 victory over Burnley at the weekend.
Goals from Marko Arnautovic, Felipe Anderson and Javier Hernandez secured victory over the Clarets who twice levelled the scoreline at the London Stadium. The result will be a much-needed confidence booster for a squad which has failed to fulfil expectations so far this season. Manuel Pellegrini will be hoping their form continues against Huddersfield next weekend.
With the January transfer window now less than two months away, the Chilean should be earmarking potential recruits to give his side a welcome boost in the New Year. With Andriy Yarmolenko and Manuel Lanzini both injured, a new playmaker could be targeted when the window reopens. With West Ham stuck in mid-table, replacing their creativity could be vital to improving their fortunes.
One man who should be on his shortlist is AC Milan maestro – Hakan Calhanoglu. Valued at £23.4m by Transfermarkt, the Turkish international rose to prominence in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen. His impressive performances in Germany saw him earn a move to the former Italian champions where he has remained an important player. However, with Milan securing the signing of Lucas Paqueta for a huge sum of money, Calhanoglu’s future at the club in uncertain – West Ham should look to take advantage and lure him to England.
The Turk netted six goals and registered seven assists in the Serie A last season, mostly from left wing. However, he excels in the centre and could strike up a formidable partnership with Marko Arnautovic in the attack. Able to open up a defence with his passing, he has averaged 3.2 key passes per game this season (WhoScored), Calhanoglu’s arrival could be the catalyst for a revival. The former Hamburg playmaker also has a reputation as one of the world’s best free-kick takers which could add valuable goals to the side.
Still only 24-years-old, this signing could prove to be a masterstroke for the Hammers.
