West Ham supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side thumped 4-1 by fellow strugglers Swansea City on Saturday, in turn suffering a third Premier League defeat in four games.
David Moyes’ men went into their clash with the Swans off the back of a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool in their preceding league outing, thus failing to build upon a vital 2-0 win over Watford in the match before. And the Hammers weren’t able to get back to winning ways on Saturday either as goals from Ki Sung-Yueng, Mike van der Hoorn, Andy King, and Jordan Ayew secured a comprehensive victory for Carlos Carvalhal’s side, with Michail Antonio’s second half effort nothing more than a mere consolation for the travelling West Ham fans.
Thus, there have been many disappointed and angry Hammers supporters in the Tavern in recent times, and their mood is unlikely to be improved by a recent report from Sky Sports, which suggests that defender Winston Reid is set to miss the rest of the season through injury.
The 29-year-old made the move to East London back in 2010 and has since been an integral part of the team over the years, appearing 223 times for the Hammers, netting ten goals and laying on ten assists in the process.
And with 18 Premier League appearances so far this term, including a start last time out against the Swans, the New Zealand international looked set to play a crucial part in West Ham’s bid to avoid relegation, yet reports suggest that he will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury sustained against Carvalhal’s side on Saturday.
And given how influential Reid has been for the club in recent times, this news is sure to come as a huge blow to manager Moyes and the club’s supporters ahead of the run in.
Landlord’s verdict: Winston Reid has been a hugely influential figure for West Ham over the years, and looked set to play a vital part in their quest to avoid Premier League relegation this season.
Yet reports suggest that the 29-year-old will miss the rest of the campaign with a knee injury, which he picked up after just 27 minutes against Swansea City on Saturday, a game David Moyes’ lost 4-1.
And given that the Hammers have conceded the joint-highest amount of goals in the league this season, Reid’s absence for the remainder of the campaign is sure to be a huge setback for the East London outfit.
