‘Irish Maldini’, ‘Open top bus out’ – West Ham United fans adore defender and his Twitter post

The Hammers in the Transfer Tavern are absolutely ecstatic following a dramatic victory at Wembley over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur yesterday evening.

Slaven Bilic took his struggling side across the capital fully aware that anything less than a victory would all but end his employment with the club. The board gave Bilic just two games to save his job earlier in the week, following an embarrassing home defeat to Brighton last Friday. When the Hammers trudged down the tunnel at halftime 2 nil down last night, Bilic’s time at the club appeared to be over. However, the Croatian, who prides himself on his ability to motivate his players, delivered something special in the dressing room to inspire his players to stage a determined fightback and save his job for the time being.

Academy product Declan Rice who was handed a starting berth by Bilic last night, must have thought he’d put West Ham on course to another defeat, after he inadvertently headed a tame effort from Dele Alli beyond Adrian to hand Spurs a 2 goal cushion just before half-time.

But West Ham played with an intensity in the second-half that has been missing from their performances all season. A quick-fire brace from Andre Ayew put the Irons briefly on level terms before Angelo Ogbonna rose highest at the near-post to power home an emphatic winner in the 70th minute and complete a valiant fightback from Bilic’s side.

The result which sees West Ham through to the quarterfinals of the Caraboa Cup, delighted 18-year-old Rice who expressed his profound joy with an emotional post on Twitter.

And the Hammers faithful still very much on a high from a rare victory, responded to Rice with plenty of encouraging words regarding his performance.

Here’s what the fans had to say in response to Rice on Twitter…
