It’s time for West Ham to up the ante in pursuit of £16.2m-rated ace following recent reports

West Ham supporters have been far from happy in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side battered 4-1 by Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday to remain very much in relegation trouble.

David Moyes’ men went into their clash with the North West outfit off the back of a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal in their previous league outing, before seeing their six-point cushion over the bottom three cut in half following Southampton’s win over Bournemouth on Saturday. Yet the Hammers were unable to re-establish that six-point lead on Sunday as goals from Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, and Fernandinho, alongside a Pablo Zabaleta own goal, secured a routine victory for Pep Guardiola’s side, thus leaving West Ham just three places and three points clear of the relegation zone.

Subsequently, there have been many despondent Hammers supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are slightly concerned that their team may well get dragged back into the relegation mire with just three matches of the campaign remaining.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident West Ham fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Wolves have joined the race for Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland.

But with Moyes’ Hammers also thought to be interested, these recent reports simply must urge the East London outfit to up the ante and thus bring the £16.2 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) to the London Stadium this summer.

Ultimately, West Ham could well be in need of a first-choice goalkeeper come the start of the 2018/19 season, what with recent reports suggesting that they won’t sign Joe Hart, and that Adrian will reportedly seek to leave if current boss Moyes remains in charge.

Thus, with no other senior shot-stoppers at the club, the Scot will obviously need to bolster those ranks, and as such it is hardly surprising that they have reportedly been linked with Stoke’s Butland.

The 25-year-old may well be part of a Potters side seemingly destined for relegation this season, but the England international has done his bit in keeping Paul Lambert’s team in with a chance of safety.

The former Birmingham City star has kept six clean sheets in the Premier League this term including in the draw at Liverpool on Saturday, and alongside man-of-the-match displays against Arsenal back in August and against Southampton more recently, it’s arguable that the Staffordshire-based club would already be down were it not for Butland.

As such, the 25-year-old looks set to go to the World Cup with England this summer and is very much in contention to be Gareth Southgate’s number one, thus underlining the calibre of goalkeeper Butland is and how far he could still go in the game.

And were Stoke to indeed lose their Premier League status this season, and indeed were West Ham to survive, the Hammers would surely fancy their chances of securing a deal for the shot-stopper.

But recent reports linking Wolves with the 25-year-old, alongside the likely need for a deal to be done prior to the World Cup finals in mid-June, must prompt the East London club to up the ante in pursuit of Butland, as they simply cannot afford to miss out on the Englishman given their likely shortage in the goalkeeping department.
