Journalist: Transfer setback for West Ham despite big money offer

West Ham United are reportedly pursuing the signature of Fulham’s Tom Cairney, though the Hammers propping up the bar here in the Transfer Tavern are seemingly likely to be frustrated on that front before the window closes.

According to Sky Sports’ transfer guru Kaveh Solhekol, the Irons tabled a £15m offer for the Scotland international. Crucial to the Cottagers’ strong campaign last season, those in west London are understood to value him so highly at the moment, that they wouldn’t even consider a £40m offer.

Over the course of recent months, the 27-year-old was linked with Newcastle United, though is an influential figure for Fulham right now and it seems he will be staying at Craven Cottage. Still, without question, our resident West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern would be very pleased if the club were able to conclude the deal for the midfield star.

He is widely considered to be the Cottagers’ most gifted player and would certainly add an element of guile to the Irons’ engine room.

Landlord’s verdict

Cairney is a wonderful player, though paying over the odds for him would be stupid for the Hammers. Indeed, anything over £15m would be too much and they shouldn’t bow to Fulham’s reported demands.
