West Ham United are interested in signing River Plate defender Gonzalo Montiel in the summer transfer window, according to a report from El Intransigente.
The 23-year-old is predominantly a right-back but can also play at both centre-back and left-back, as per Transfermarkt.
According to TyC, the Hammers were actually keen on signing Montiel in the January window and made a loan offer along with an option to buy him for €10m (£8.3m), but this bid was rejected by River Plate.
However, it seems that rebuffal hasn’t deterred the east London club, with this latest report from El Intransigente claiming that they are considering making another offer for the right-back when the transfer window re-opens in the summer.
This time they will go in with a straight offer to buy the four-time Argentina international, who according to El Intransigente has a €15m (£12.5m) release clause within his contract. That figure would, however, rise to €20m (£16.6m) if the initial clause hasn’t been triggered before the last 10 days of the window.
Looking at his statistics, Montiel could well prove to be an excellent signing for West Ham if they were able to pull it off.
Indeed, he has been playing very well for River Plate this season, helping them to six clean sheets and winning 4.5 duels per game, as well as making 2.1 tackles and 1.5 clearances per match too. He has also shown his attacking qualities by creating four big chances and averaging one key pass per game (SofaScore).
Right-back is an area in which the Hammers are likely to recruit in the summer, too. Whilst they do have Ryan Fredericks, their other current option in that position is Pablo Zabaleta and his contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign (Transfermarkt).
However, whether or not they can get Montiel is likely to depend on which division they are playing. They are currently languishing in the bottom three in the Premier League table with just 13 games to go (BBC Sport) and, if they are relegated to the Championship, they may not be able to sign the Argentina international.
