West Ham supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to the news that Manuel Pellegrini, who led Manchester City to the Premier League title back in 2014, has taken over as manager of the East London club.
The Hammers had been on the lookout for a new boss after David Moyes left last week at the expiration of his contract, this all after fulfilling the brief and keeping the club in the Premier League with a 13th place finish. However, his contract wasn’t extended and now Pellegrini is the man at the helm at the London Stadium, with many of our resident Hammers fans hoping he has a similar effect at their club as he did City, given he led the Citizens to the title back in 2014, and indeed two League Cup triumphs during his stint at the Etihad Stadium.
As such, many of those West Ham fans lining up at the bar are wondering what additions the Chilean could seek to make during the close season in a bid to bolster the Hammers ranks, with some hoping that he seeks a reunion with £2.7 million-rated forward Alvaro Negredo (as per Transfermarkt).
The 32-year-old was signed by Pellegrini in the early stages of his reign at City, and the forward certainly helped the side by netting 23 goals in 49 appearances in his first season at the club, in turn helping them to the Premier League title, and indeed the League Cup.
And while things didn’t get any better for the Spaniard at the Etihad, he didn’t play for them again, there’s little doubting that Pellegrini got the very best out of Negredo during that season, as he has since then failed to exceed the 20-goal mark in the four campaigns succeeding that one.
And while Hammers fans may be concerned given that Negredo is 32 and perhaps past his best, one mustn’t forget that he still bagged nine times for Middlesbrough back in the 2016/17 season to finish as their top-scorer that term, and that was all in a team that seriously struggled for goals and to create chances.
Thus, put him in this West Ham team with the likes of Marko Arnautovic and Manuel Lanzini alongside him, and the Spain international could flourish once again under Pellegrini.
Ultimately, the Hammers are also in need of striking reinforcements given that Andre Ayew and Diafra Sakho, both of whom left the club in January, finished third and fifth respectively in their goal-scoring charts this season, thus underlining the need to strengthen up top.
And with the futures of Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez somewhat uncertain heading into the summer, Pellegrini may well be on the lookout for improvements in the attacking third of the pitch.
And with Negredo’s current club Besiktas reportedly interested in Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos, the Spaniard could be pushed down the pecking order at the Turkish giants.
As such, it could all align perfectly for Pellegrini to seek a reunion with the 32-year-old at West Ham, as he eyes to take the Hammers to the next level next season.
