After confirming Premier League safety for another season, it’s time for West Ham fans to look forward to the summer transfer window.
Manuel Pellegrini is surely likely to rehaul the squad in a window that could see plenty of West Ham players leave the club and vice versa, and one name to come up recently with a move to the London Stadium is one that Irons fans will know well.
According to Marca, West Ham are interested in Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi, who could be set to leave the reigning Premier League champions after a season of playing second fiddle to John Stones and Aymeric Laporte.
With proven quality to play to an exceptional level in the Premier League, what would the potential consequences be of Otamendi joining West Ham this summer?
Hammers make one of the signings of the season
Otamendi was brought in by Manuel Pellegrini during his time at City, and a reunion with the Chilean manager could bring about one of the best signings for the upcoming 2019/20 Premier League season.
Although the 31-year-old has been out of Guardiola’s team for most of the season, only making 17 league appearances, Otamendi is still a player with proven Premier League quality, and he would be an exceptional signing for the Hammers.
People are quick to forget that Otamendi was one of the best defenders in the league when City steamrolled to the title last year, and a player of that quality will be a valuable asset for West Ham going forward as a club.
Fabian Balbuena loses starting spot
With a big name signing in Otamendi coming in and Issa Diop looking to be the real deal after his summer move from Toulouse, Paraguayan international Fabian Balbuena will likely find himself on the bench despite a decent debut season in England.
The former Corinthians defender has been solid since his move to east London last season, but at 27 it is likely Pellegrini will turn to the younger, more promising Diop to partner alongside Otamendi in the defence, relegating Balbuena to the bench.
