West Ham supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern during the international break, what with their side losing their preceding three Premier League matches prior to the fortnight interruption.
David Moyes’ men were tenth in the division at the rear end of January and looked set for a relatively straight-forward end to the season, but the Hammers have since won just one of their five matches to fall alarmingly down the division. And the East London outfit would have been glad for the international break after losing to Liverpool, Swansea City, and Burnley in their three matches leading up to the interruption, results which have instigated their fall to 17th place in the Premier League, just two points clear of danger.
Subsequently, there have been many frustrated and disappointed Hammers fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their team can get back to winning ways against 18th place Southampton at the London Stadium on Saturday.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident West Ham supporters to discuss, not least recent reports linking Newcastle with a move for Besiktas midfielder Oguzhan Ozyakup.
And with Rafa Benitez seemingly interested in bolstering his midfield options, these recent reports should prompt the Hammers into reigniting their interest in the Magpies’ £9 million-rated ace Jonjo Shelvey (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the 26-year-old has had a decent campaign for the North East giants with two assists in 22 Premier League appearances, both of which coming in his sensational display against Southampton in their most recent league outing.
And while they are hardly ground-breaking numbers, the England international has looked menacing in the middle of the park in launching attacks for Benitez’s side, with Matt Ritchie the only man to have created more chances than the midfielder so far this season.
Clearly, Shelvey is a hugely talented player – some felt he should have been in the most recent England – and he was one man West Ham were linked with during January in a bid to solve their evident midfield woes.
Cheikhou Kouyate has seriously struggled for form in that central midfield area for much of the campaign while Pedro Obiang has suffered from injury issues, with it arguable that Mark Noble has been their most influential player in that position.
Thus, further reinforcements are needed, and at the age of 26 with a wide array of passing and a desire to get stuck in, Shelvey could be the perfect man to come in and solidify that West Ham midfield.
And with Ozyakup reportedly eyed by Newcastle boss Benitez, it may suggest that he is looking to move one or more of his current central midfielders on, and with Shelvey not always having been a regular this season, it could well be him.
As such, the Hammers must seek to ask the question this summer, and thus attempt to lure the six-times England international to the London Stadium.
