West Ham supporters have been pretty satisfied in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team edge closer to Premier League safety courtesy of a 1-1 draw with Stoke City on Monday night.
David Moyes’ men went into their clash with the second-bottom Potters with renewed confidence after beating Southampton and drawing with Chelsea in their preceding two matches, results which put some distance between themselves and danger. Yet their fine work in those games looked set to be undone when Peter Crouch gave Paul Lambert’s Stoke the lead at the London Stadium, only for Andy Carroll to brilliantly equalise in the final minute to preserve a point for Moyes’ side, thus moving them eight points clear of the bottom three.
Subsequently, there have been many satisfied Hammers supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are growing in confidence that their side will indeed avoid the drop this term, given the eight-point gap to the relegation zone with just five matches to play.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident West Ham fans to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that Crystal Palace are considering selling striker Christian Benteke this summer.
And with the Hammers struggling in the striking department, and ultimately unable to rely on Carroll over the entirety of a season, these recent reports should prompt the East London club into making a summer move for the £19.8 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, while Moyes’ side don’t possess the worst goal-scoring record in the Premier League this season, the fact that Andre Ayew and Diafra Sakho, both of whom left in the summer, remain third and fourth on their goal-scoring charts underlines that reinforcements are needed in the attacking ranks over the summer.
And while Carroll made the difference against Stoke on Monday night, that was his first game for the club since January, and as such simply cannot be deemed reliable enough to lead the line, even if the Hammers are an evidently much better team with the England star in it.
Add in the uncertainty surrounding Javier Hernandez’s future, and Moyes is likely to be short of attacking quality heading into the new season, which is why he simply must take advantage of Palace’s reported desire to offload Benteke.
Yes, the 27-year-old hasn’t had his best season to date with the Eagles, but he has managed at least nine goals in each of his previous five Premier League campaigns, including 15 for Sam Allardyce’s Palace in their survival effort last time round.
And with the Belgium international possessing the sort of strength and ability in the air similar to Carroll, it’s clear that he could be a huge asset to the Hammers next season, and indeed in the coming years as they seek to move to the next level in their new stadium – landing Benteke may even get the best out of Hernandez, and thus convince him to stay at the club.
As such, with Palace reportedly willing to offload the 27-year-old, West Ham must seek to seize the initiative and make a summer move for the Belgian ace.
