West Ham supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team swept aside 4-1 by Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday to remain in relegation contention.
David Moyes’ men went into their clash with the Citizens off the back of a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal in their last league outing, and having seen their lead over the bottom three cut to three points following Southampton’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth on Saturday. Yet the Hammers were unable to pull clear of the relegation zone as goals from Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, and Fernandinho, alongside a Pablo Zabaleta own goal, sealed a comprehensive victory for Pep Guardiola’s side at the London Stadium.
Thus, there have been many disappointed and frustrated Hammers supporters in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom are hoping that their team can indeed bounce back when they visit Leicester City next weekend.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident West Ham fans to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that Crystal Palace have joined the race to sign Fulham’s Ryan Fredericks this summer.
And these recent reports must trigger West Ham into intensifying their interest in the £3.6 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) this summer to avoid missing out on a potentially significant signing.
Ultimately, the Hammers have seriously struggled in the right back department for a few years now, what with Sam Byram brought to the club back in January 2016 in a bid to be the next long-term right back at the club, only to struggle to adapt to the rigours of Premier League football.
And while Zabaleta has on the whole performed solidly this term following his move from Manchester City in the summer, at the age of 33 he is simply not the long-term answer to the problem, whereas Fredericks could be.
The 25-year-old has comfortably been one of the best and most consistent full backs in the Championship in the last few years, laying on nine assists this season to help Slavisa Jokanovic’s Cottagers in their promotion bid this term, alongside five assists in their run to the play-off semi-finals last season.
Thus, it’s clear that Fredericks has pedigree in the attacking third of the pitch, yet he has also shown adeptness in the defensive third of the pitch to suggest that he has all the capabilities to succeed in the Premier League.
And based on his consistently high-level displays in the Championship, he is surely ready for a shot at the top-flight.
As such, he’d without doubt be an asset to Moyes’ side in the coming years in plugging a clear hole in their squad, and that is why the recent reports linking Palace with Fredericks must prompt the Hammers into intensifying their interest, as they can ill-afford to miss out on a bargain summer deal for the 25-year-old.
