West Ham supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been digesting the news that manager David Moyes has left the club at the expiration of his contract, despite leading the East London outfit to Premier League safety.
The Scot was brought in as a replacement for the sacked Slaven Bilic back in November with the Hammers languishing in the division’s bottom three, and very much embroiled in a relegation scrap. And while they remained in and around the relegation mire for much of the campaign, Moyes did indeed get the job done in leading the club to 13th place in the table, although it wasn’t enough to earn the former Everton and Manchester United chief a new deal.
As such, several of our resident Hammers fans are wondering what the future holds for their club on the managerial front, but in terms of possible player additions this summer, they are likely to be intrigued by recent reports suggesting that Arsenal could seek to sell Aaron Ramsey this summer.
And these revelations should trigger the East London club into making an audacious summer move for the £36 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt), as doing so would certainly bolster their flagging midfield ranks heading into the 2018/19 season.
Ultimately, the central midfield department has been a problematic area for the Hammers throughout the season, with Cheikhou Kouyate regularly underperforming in the heart of the midfield, while Pedro Obiang only played 21 times due to injury.
Mark Noble deserves credit for consistently performing well in the middle of the park, but if West Ham are serious about moving to the next level in their new stadium, something they have so far failed to do, they simply have to reinforce the midfield department.
And Ramsey’s arrival would do just that.
The 27-year-old enjoyed one of his best seasons to date with the Gunners in bagging 11 goals and laying on 12 assists for Arsene Wenger’s side, thus seeing him record his third ten-plus goal campaign in his last five years at the Emirates Stadium.
Arguably, the Wales international has been one of their most consistent and influential performers this term in helping the Gunners to sixth place in the Premier League and the last four of the Europa League, which again begs the question as to why Arsenal have let his contract run into the last 12 months.
Ultimately, Ramsey would add a great deal of talent to the West Ham midfield department, and would also represent the sort of signing Hammers fans were hoping their side would make when they moved to the London Stadium back in 2017.
If they are to move forward, players of the calibre of Ramsey are needed at the club, and with Arsenal reportedly considering cashing in on the 27-year-old a year before the expiration of his contract, West Ham must seek to make an audacious move for the midfielder.
