West Ham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the remainder of the summer transfer window following the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini as the club’s new manager.
David Moyes left the East London outfit at the expiration of his short-term contract earlier this month despite guiding the club to Premier League safety, eventually finishing 13th in the division and nine points clear of the bottom three. However, the club’s hierarchy opted against extending his deal and have instead appointed former Manchester City boss Pellegrini, who of course led the Citizens to the league title back in 2014, as well as two League Cup successes during his tenure at the Etihad Stadium.
Thus, there are many expectant Hammers fans in the Tavern at present with several hopeful of shrewd additions this summer, which is why they are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking Newcastle United with a move for reported target Ryan Fredericks.
And these reports should trigger the East London club into making a summer move for the £3.6 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) in a bid to solve a key area of weakness in the West Ham squad.
Ultimately, the right back spot has been a problem area at the London Stadium for a while now, with former Leeds United defender Sam Byram brought in back in 2016 to be the next long-term option in that position.
However, the Englishman has struggled to adapt to the demands of the Premier League, to the point whereby ex-chief Slaven Bilic signed veteran right back Pablo Zabaleta last summer, but at the age of 33, he simply isn’t the long-term solution to the issue.
Fredericks could be though, and based on his efforts for newly-promoted Fulham in the last few years, they simply cannot afford to lose out on him to Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed a stellar couple of seasons at Craven Cottage to become one of the best right backs outside of the top-flight, with the Englishman laying on five assists in their run to the play-off semi-finals last term, before bettering that with nine assists in 47 appearances as they won the end-of-season lottery this time round.
Be it bombing forward and getting into good attacking areas, or indeed showing defensive discipline and resilience at the other end, Fredericks has got it all – it’s no wonder he has been linked with a Premier League move in the last few months.
Fulham’s promotion to the top tier could throw a spanner in any possible deal, with it plausible that Fredericks will now extend his stay at the club, but with his contract up next month, making a move now, during the uncertainty, could be enough to secure his signature.
And with Newcastle reportedly keen on the 25-year-old as serious competition for DeAndre Yedlin, Pellegrini’s West Ham simply must respond with a move of their own in the near future.
