Manuel Pellegrini needs to be on the lookout for potential January recruits following an inconsistent start to the season.
Seven points from nine games was the worst return at this point in the season since 2010/11 when they ended the season at the bottom of the Premier League. David Moyes was given the boot in the summer and replaced with the ex-Manchester City boss who was backed significantly in the transfer market. As of yet, their extravagant spending hasn’t transitioned into good results on the pitch.
Pellegrini desperately needs additions in the January transfer window – players who can quickly improve the Hammers’ fortunes on the field. One man they should be targeting is Chelsea maestro – Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the England international remains on the fringes of the first-team at Stamford Bridge and could be tempted to depart the club in the New Year.
Following the arrival of Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho, Maurizio Sarri hasn’t found a place for the youngster in his midfield. The emergence of Ross Barkley as a key player has also pushed Loftus-Cheek further down the pecking order. However, he showed Sarri his worth in mid-week, netting a brilliant hat-trick against BATE in the Europa League; becoming the youngest player to score a hat-trick for Chelsea since 1987.
His match-winning performance was just a glimpse of his quality and what he could bring to the West Ham midfield. Loftus-Cheek is an enigma, a physically imposing midfielder who possesses excellent technical ability. He will be chomping at the bit to prove himself in the Premier League and West Ham could benefit greatly from bringing him to the London Stadium.
