Sealing this key deal in the summer could be the best £3m West Ham have ever spent

West Ham supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side humbled 4-1 by Liverpool in the Premier League last weekend, thus slipping to just three points clear of the bottom three.

David Moyes’ men went into their clash at Anfield off the back of securing a vital 2-0 win over Watford in their previous league encounter, a result which moved them up to 12th place in the division and thus put greater distance between themselves and the relegation zone. Yet the Hammers fell to just three points clear of danger on Saturday as goals from Emre Can, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane sealed a routine victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side, thus keeping the East London outfit firmly in the relegation mire with ten games of the season left.

Thus, there have been many disappointed West Ham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that their team can get back to winning ways when they travel to fellow relegation contenders Swansea City on Saturday.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Hammers to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that they are interested in a possible cut-price deal for West Brom’s Jonny Evans this summer.

Were the Baggies to go down, the 30-year-old would reportedly be available for just £3 million during the close season, and were the Hammers to indeed benefit from such relegation and land the Northern Ireland international this summer, it could represent the best £3 million they have ever spent.

Ultimately, Evans was being linked with a move to both Arsenal and Manchester City during the January transfer window, such have been his efforts in the heart of the West Brom backline in the last few years – that’s how good he has been and how highly rated he is in the game.

And there’s little doubt that he could shore up a Hammers backline that have conceded a staggering 50 goals in the Premier League this season, only Stoke City (54) have shipped more to suggest that the defensive ranks need reinforcing over the summer if they are to push on next term.

And Evans’ arrival would do just that.

Yes, the centre-back turned 30 during January and as such wouldn’t be a huge nod to the future, but the former Manchester United man is a better defender than the vast majority currently on the books at West Ham, and thus would improve their backline.

And having worked with Evans before during the his ill-fated stint in charge at Old Trafford, Hammers chief Moyes will know exactly what you get from the Northern Irishman, so the fact they are reportedly interested would suggest that the 54-year-old knows that he is a character he wants at the club.

And for just £3 million if West Brom get relegated, when figures significantly more than that were being banded around earlier this year, it would represent an absolute steal, and could well turn out to be the best £3 million the Hammers have ever spent were they to lure him to the London Stadium.
