West Ham supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side capitulate in the second half to lose 4-1 at Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.
David Moyes’ men went into their clash with the Gunners having won one and drawn the other two of their preceding three league encounters, results which put some distance between themselves and the bottom three. And they looked on course for another positive result when Marko Arnautovic’s strike cancelled out Nacho Monreal’s opener midway through the second half, only for a brace from Alexandre Lacazette and an Aaron Ramsey strike to secure a comprehensive victory for the North London giants, thus leaving the Hammers six points clear of danger.
As such, there have been many disappointed West Ham fans in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom are particularly frustrated at their team’s efforts in the last 20 minutes against the Gunners, although many feel that they’ll have enough to avoid the drop.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Hammers supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that the club are set to give Declan Rice a new deal this summer.
And securing an agreement with the £1.8 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) would without doubt be one of best decisions West Ham have made in many a year.
Ultimately, the versatile 19-year-old has come on leaps and bounds at the East London outfit this season, with the youngster earning 27 senior appearances for Moyes’ side, this all after only making his debut for the club at the rear end of the 2016/17 campaign.
Nonetheless, the Republic of Ireland international has become an integral member of the squad this term, highlighted by his 11 Premier League starts so far, of which four have come in their last four league games.
Yes, he did make an error in allowing Ramsey’s cross to sail over his head and into the back of the net on Sunday, but overall Rice has shown a maturity beyond his years for the Hammers this season, and has certainly helped Moyes in filling in various positions on the pitch.
Be it in a more defensive midfield role, in the heart of the West Ham backline, or even at full back, Rice has certainly proven his credentials and indeed his worth to manager Moyes this season, and appears to be exactly the sort of player one would want at one’s club.
The heart, desire, and passion Rice showed in their magnificent victory over Tottenham in the Carabao Cup back in October was indicative of a player who will give everything to the cause, and at the tender age of 19, he’s sure to play a key part in West Ham’s future.
Thus, such has been his meteoric rise into the first team, alongside his appetite to succeed at West Ham, securing an agreement with the versatile star over his long-term future is one of the best decisions the East London outfit have made in years.
