Premier League

Striking this key agreement would be the best piece of business West Ham can do this year

West Ham supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team easily beaten 4-1 by Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday to slip to just three points clear of the relegation zone.

David Moyes’ men went into their encounter with the free-scoring Reds off the back of a crucial 2-0 success over Watford in their previous league clash, a result which moved them up to 12th in the division and thus put some distance between themselves and the bottom three. Yet the Hammers now sit just three points above danger as goals from Emre Can, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane sealed a comprehensive victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side, with Michail Antonio’s second half strike nothing more than a consolation for those travelling West Ham supporters.

Subsequently, there have been many frustrated Hammers fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping their side can get back to winning ways when they travel to fellow relegation candidates Swansea City this weekend.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident West Ham supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that the club are readying a new and improved deal to keep Manuel Lanzini at the London Stadium, given recent reported interest from Liverpool.

And given how influential and integral the midfield maestro is to this Hammers side, securing a new deal with the Argentine is the best piece of business West Ham can do this year.

Ultimately, the 25-year-old has done well stepping into the shoes vacated by Dimitri Payet back in January 2017, with Lanzini finishing last season with an impressive eight goals in the top-flight, four of which post-January, to help the Hammers record a 12th place finish.

And he has continued to be hugely effective in the West Ham midfield this season with three goals and eight assists in all competitions, although he has struggled with niggling injuries this term so the Hammers faithful haven’t always seen the Argentina international at his very best.

But there is little doubt that Lanzini is one of the most talented attacking players in the West Ham squad, be it with the ball at his feet taking defenders on, or orchestrating things from the middle of park with his incredible eye for a pass and vision.

Ultimately, he is one of West Ham’s best players, and if the East London outfit are serious about moving up to the next level, as appears to be their plan following the move to the London Stadium, then they cannot be in the business of selling their most prized assets.

Lanzini offers them something very few other players in the Hammers squad can – despite missing nine league games this term, he has still created more chances than any other West Ham player in the Premier League (31).

Thus, taking him out of the side would significantly weaken Moyes’ team, and given the nature of the division and how tight it is among the bottom 12 clubs, that could be the difference between staying up and going down next term, or the difference between a European push and a relegation battle.

As such, striking an agreement with Lanzini over a new deal is without doubt the best piece of business the East London club can do this yeaer.
