Recent reports in The Sun have suggested that West Ham are interested in Jese, who has been made available for a transfer move this month by his club PSG.
A more than decent move, you might think, and you’d be forgiven for doing so, too. Here’s a young Spanish forward that clearly, surely, has some talent as he wouldn’t have the likes of the Parisians and Real Madrid on his CV.
But, there’s more to it than just names on a player’s playing history, as West Ham should know more than anyone else this season.
Last summer West Ham signed players that, based on club history, should have done a decent job. Simone Zaza on loan from Juventus, Alvaro Arbeloa with Real Madrid and Liverpool, Havard Nortdveit with Monchengladbach and Sofiane Feghouli from Valencia.
All of them came from big European clubs and all of them have done very little to help the club’s fortunes this season.
Obviously, it would be unwise to suggest that you should never sign a player from a big club but just because they play for one doesn’t actually mean that they’re any good.
Jese may sign for West Ham and do the business but his recent history suggests that is highly debatable.
13 goals from his spell at Real Madrid followed by just two this season for PSG suggests he’s not the player his list of employers suggests he is – and West Ham would do well to take heed of that ahead of any potential move.
The club cannot afford another transfer mistake, put simply, because things are looking very close to breaking point at the moment.
