West Ham supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team get back to winning ways in the Premier League courtesy of a 2-0 success over Watford at the London Stadium on Saturday.
David Moyes’ men went into their encounter with the Hornets off the back of going down 3-1 to Brighton in their previous league outing, a result which saw their fine run of six matches unbeaten come to an end. Yet the Hammers responded well on Saturday as goals from Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautovic sealed a routine victory for the East London outfit, thus moving them level on points with Javi Gracia’s side in the Premier League table, four points clear of the bottom three.
Thus, there have been many delighted West Ham fans in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom are hoping that Saturday’s win can be the catalyst for a run of form which finally puts any lingering relegation concerns to bed.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Hammers supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that they are keen on a summer move for Fulham right-back Ryan Fredericks.
And given how influential he has been for the Cottagers in recent times, the 25-year-old would be an ideal signing for Moyes’ men come the summer.
Ultimately, the defender has played a key part in helping Slavisa Jokanovic’s side into Championship promotion contention this season, laying on an impressive seven assists in just 30 games for the club, adding to the five he managed last term in helping the West London club reach the play-offs.
Clearly, the 25-year-old is an excellent full back at Championship level, and would go some way to bolstering the right-back department at the London Stadium, an area that has been in need of work in the last few years.
Pablo Zabaleta joined the club over the summer but at 33 the Argentina international isn’t getting any younger, whilst Sam Byram could be the long-term solution to the right-back problem, but injuries as well as struggles for form have cast doubts over his capabilities.
Thus, Fredericks would be arriving at a club in need of a right-back option both for the present and indeed the future, and would drastically reduce the average age of that Hammers backline, which is sure to delight several of our resident West Ham fans.
And while the 25-year-old wouldn’t be the big money signing some Hammers supporters may be after, it would be a nod to the future and as such would go against some recent defensive signings, with Zabaleta, Patrice Evra, and Jose Fonte all joining the club in their 30s in the last few years.
Add in the fact that Fredericks is out of contract at Fulham in the summer, and it wouldn’t cost the West Ham board anything to bring one of the Championship’s best full backs to the London Stadium – a win-win for both the hierarchy and indeed the supporters.
Thus, the £1.8 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) would be an ideal signing for the East London outfit this summer.
