West Ham supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side thumped 4-1 at home by Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday.
David Moyes’ men went into their meeting with the record-breaking Citizens having seen their lead over the bottom three cut to just three points following Southampton’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth on Saturday, and that is what the gap remains after City’s dominant performance at the London Stadium. Goals from Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, and Fernandinho, alongside a Pablo Zabaleta own goal, secured a comprehensive victory for Pep Guardiola’s men, a result which keeps West Ham firmly in the relegation mire with just three games to play.
Subsequently, there have been many disappointed and frustrated Hammers supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that their team can bounce back when they travel to out-of-form Leicester City next week.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident West Ham fans to discuss, not least recent reports linking their side with a summer move for West Brom defender Craig Dawson.
And while the £5.4 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) looks set to be a part of a Baggies side heading for relegation this season, his efforts in the last few years alongside West Ham’s evident defensive woes suggest that he is the perfect signing for Moyes’ side this summer.
Ultimately, the four goals they shipped on Sunday saw the East London club become the highest conceders in the Premier League this season, with the Hammers having conceded 67 goals in their 35 league games, two more than the next highest Stoke City.
And if Moyes’ side are serious about moving to the next level next season and potentially challenging for Europe, they simply have to tighten up at the back – failure to do so would see them embroiled in another relegation scrap.
And Dawson could be the man to help solidify the backline.
The 27-year-old has been a rare bright spark in an otherwise disastrous campaign for West Brom this term, earning 25 Premier League appearances in all, and netting two goals along the way to underline his aerial strength from set pieces.
Significantly though, the former England Under-21 international has proven his defensive qualities over the last few years, and while this season hasn’t been the Baggies’ best, one mustn’t forget his excellent efforts in missing just one league game last term in their run to tenth place in the division.
Be it at right back, where he was regularly used last season, or indeed in the middle of the Baggies backline, Dawson has proven to be adept and reliable at Premier League level – the same cannot necessarily be said of several Hammers defenders this term.
As such, the 27-year-old appears to be the ideal defensive signing for the East London club this summer, which is why they simply must move for the Englishman.
