West Ham supporters in the Transfer Tavern have used the last few days to look back at their side’s ultimately underwhelming season to date, and indeed look ahead to what is in store for their team between now and the end of the campaign.
The East London outfit went into the 2017/18 season hugely optimistic after securing a 12th place finish last term, and indeed after making some shrewd acquisitions during the summer in the form of Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautovic. Yet things haven’t worked for the Hammers this term and manager Slaven Bilic paid for that with his job back in October, from which David Moyes has taken over and certainly steadied the ship at the London Stadium, although relegation still remains a possibility with just nine games of the campaign remaining.
Thus, there have been some frustrated Hammers fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can indeed stave off relegation this season, and thus seek to build in the summer ahead of a much better campaign next time round.
And several of our resident West Ham supporters are already looking ahead to the summer transfer window, and thus who their team could look to land in a bid to move to the next level next season.
And were Newcastle United to lose their top-flight status this term, many believe that £6.3 million-rated defender Jamaal Lascelles (as per Transfermarkt) should be their number one target this summer.
And given his efforts for the Magpies this season, it’s not difficult to see why.
The 24-year-old has been absolutely magnificent in the heart of Rafa Benitez’s backline this term with 23 Premier League appearances in all, missing the other five only as a result of injury.
Whether it’s a captain’s performance in his own box or coming up with key goals in the opposition’s area, the former Nottingham Forest centre-back has proven his worth to the North East giants this season, and is comfortably one of the best centre-halves in the bottom half of the division.
And given West Ham’s defensive plights this term, there’s little doubting what a big impact he’d have on their backline.
Heading into the weekend, only Stoke City had conceded more goals than Moyes’ side, and given the tight nature of the bottom 12 clubs in the Premier League, tightening up defensively could be the difference between a relegation battle and a European challenge next season.
Were Newcastle to indeed go down this term, Lascelles would certainly be a man in-demand given his exploits for the club this season, and West Ham must make sure they are ready to pounce, and thus fend off the likely interest in his services.
Landing the 24-year-old could indeed help propel the Hammers up the Premier League next time round, and as such they must make the young centre-back their number one target if the Magpies get relegated this term.
