On the 31st December 2018, West Ham announced the signing of Samir Nasri on a free transfer.
The former Arsenal midfielder had been away from football for nearly a year after Nasri was found guilty of doping by UEFA for an initial six-month ban, which was then extended to 12 months after an appeal from the football governing body’s ethics and disciplinary inspector.
The deal was a surprising one for both West Ham and Premier League fans. An extreme lack of game time over a long period of time made him an awkward free signing to make due to his lack of fitness and previous problems with teammates and coaches at former clubs.
Nasri burst onto the scene in English when he was signed from Marseille by Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, and the then young French playmaker quickly established himself as one of the best creative midfielders in the Premier League.
Nasri’s move to Manchester City helped the Citizens to their first Premier League title in decades, but he soon quickly fell out of favour at the club due to new signings taking the midfielder’s place in the team.
Here’s how West Ham fans reacted to the news of Nasri’s signing…
In Pellegrini I trust, turn this guy’s career around

Gotta give him a chance let’s see

If he hits the ground running this will be a very astute signing from @Ing_Pellegrini .

A huge gamble with him not playing in a very long time. Plus his injury record isn’t great either. That said, if anyone is going to get a tune out of him it’s Pellegrini.

Great signing, forget all the negative stuff, he’s a great addition to the club, and will get my full support like every player who represents our club
Welcome aboard Samir, you are now playing for the greatest club and supporters in the world, enjoy the ride

If fit and motivated – this could be a great signing

Not many expected Nasri to be a first-team starter for West Ham, but after three months at the club, few thought the former French international would have this small of an impact for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.
Since arriving before the New Year, the former Manchester City and Arsenal man has only started four games for the club out of a possible 15 for the Hammers, making another two off the bench.
Aside from these two goal contributions, Nasri has been an underwhelming success in east London. Fitness issues have kept the Frenchman out either on the bench as an unused sub or out of the team entirely, and it’s likely the former Sevilla man will be offered a contract extension come the end of his current deal this summer.
West Ham fans, what have you made of Nasri? Let us know!
