West Ham have had a poor start to the 2018/19 Premier League season. Currently without a point, they sit at rock bottom of the table.
In The Hammers’ four opening games, they have only managed to muster two goals, the joint lowest in the league, as their attack continues to flounder. Marko Arnautović has started upfront in every game, but has partnered Javier Hernández, Felipe Anderson, and played as a lone striker twice this season as well, as manager Manuel Pellegrini searches for his best option in attack.
This is where new signing Xande Silva comes to the fore. West Ham signed the Portuguese 21-year-old in the final days of the summer transfer window from Vitoria de Guimaraes, but he is yet to feature for the first team.
However, that does not mean that he has not made an impact at the club already. In just four starts for the under-23s, Silva has bagged five goals, including a hat-trick in under ten minutes against Tottenham. His pace and skill make him a terrifying prospect for defenders, as he looks to light up the under-23 side.
Silva (valued at £180k on Transfermarkt.co.uk) can be deployed as either a striker or a winger, and could be the answer to The Hammers’ woes. Summer signing Lucas Perez still deserves a decent shot at solving these problems for West Ham, and may be due a couple of starts for The Irons, the same could be said about Andy Carroll once he returns from injury. But if these two cannot deliver for Pelligrini, it may be time the Chilean turns to the 21-year-old.
Ultimately, it may be too early in the season to see Silva featuring for West Ham, but if the club’s season continues like this, they may need to call upon a youngster like this to provide them with the inspiration to get them out of this rut.
