Unsung Hero: Declan Rice was a key figure in West Ham United’s win against Norwich City

Declan Rice has become a fan favourite at London Stadium, as indicated on West Ham United’s official website, becoming known for being efficient in both winning back the ball and his play when he has it at his feet.

Sebastien Haller was the player who many were focusing on after the Hammers beat Norwich City 2-0 on Saturday, after scoring his third goal in claret and blue.

However, Rice was also a key part of West Ham’s victory, displaying the traits he has become so well known for.

He was an integral defensive figure for the Hammers, as they kept Teemu Pukki – who had already scored five goals prior to this meeting – to only two shots, as per WhoScored, with neither of them causing Lukasz Fabianski any great worry.

The standout of Rice’s statistics is that he completed 5 tackles, while he also made 2 clearances, 3 interceptions and won 1 aerial duel.

Aside from one moment where he was caught on the ball, Rice looked comfortable and in control when in possession, completing the 1 dribble he attempted and 88% of the passes he made.

His WhoScored rating of 7.7 gives an indication of the reliability he showed in the middle of the pitch, helping the Hammers earn their first clean sheet of the season.

So while he didn’t pull off anything spectacular, Rice did exactly what Manuel Pellegrini will have wanted him to do.
