West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern are understandably delighted with the business their side has conducted thus far but they’re keen to see the club continuing to improve.
The additions of Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez have significantly bolstered the Hammers’ ranks but last weekend’s hefty defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford shows there’s still work to be done, particularly in midfield.
West Ham need a top-class midfielder capable of bridging the gap between defence and attack, whilst allowing the more attacking players at the club to have more of an impact getting forward by protecting the defensive line.
As such, the news consistently linking West Ham with a club-record deal for William Carvalho is particularly exciting for the club as he’s the sort of signing they’re crying out for- and he’d be a massive coup for the East London outfit.
The 25-year-old is an experienced international with Portugal and was part of the side that won the European Championship’s last year, which means he’ll add to the winning mentality the club has already started to build by bringing in Hart, Zabaleta and Hernandez.
At his age, Carvalho also possesses superb sell-on value for the future, which is crucial for the Hammers as they gradually push forward as the immediate truth is they’ll struggle to hold onto their best players for extended periods, so it’s a signing that ticks all the boxes.
It’s also a major statement of intent from a Hammers side that are keen to bounce back from their disappointing debut campaign at the London Stadium last year, which saw the side spend the majority of the season flirting with relegation.
