After an impressive debut season in English football, it is perhaps unsurprising to see one of the Premier League big hitters take an interest in Issa Diop.
Sky Sports News reported last month that Manchester United were interested in West Ham’s 22-year-old defender, and now according to L’Equipe via Sports Mole, the Red Devils are set to submit a formal offer of £45 million for Diop, who has four years remaining on his current contract with the Hammers.
Signed for a reported £22 million according to BBC Sport, Diop made the transition to Premier League football well, playing all but five games last season as the Hammers finished 10th in the league table, with the French defender earning a WhoScored rating of 6.89, the seventh highest in the West Ham squad for the 2018/19 campaign.
With Manchester United signing the likes of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, it is already painting a picture that the club are looking towards the future when it comes to their summer signings this transfer window, which is why it makes sense that the Premier League giants are interested in Diop.
Comparing Diop with Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling from stats from WhoScored, it is easy to see as to why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is so keen on a move for the Frenchman as the West Ham defender defensively trumps both United defenders in every defensive stat aside from average dribbled past per game.
Tackles, interceptions and offsides won are three stats in particular where Diop comes out as the victor when compared to the United duo, an even more impressive feat when you consider that the West Ham man only played four more games than the Red Devils most used central defender last season, Lindelof.
It is clear as to why United are keen to sign Diop this summer when judging him off his stats and it’ll be interesting to see whether the Irons can hold firm if an offer does arrive.
