Asmir Begovic would be an excellent signing for West Ham United in the January transfer window, that is according to ex-England international striker Darren Bent.
The 32-year-old shot-stopper is currently contracted to AFC Bournemouth, although he has spent the first half of the 2019/20 campaign on loan in Azerbaijan with Qarabag.
Should West Ham sign Asmir Begovic?
That temporary deal is set to expire on December 31st, however, (Transfermarkt) and a report from The Sun suggests that he will look for a new club in January with West Ham thought to be interested in him.
Bent believes that the Bosnian international would be a positive addition for the east London club and the ideal replacement for Roberto.
Discussing the Hammers’ goalkeeping situation with Football Insider, Bent said: “Losing Fabianski was a big blow as he’s a very good goalkeeper and Roberto was awful and I mean awful as he caused all kind of problems.
“They need to address that issue as it’s been costing them points.
“And for me, it would be a great signing if they could go out and get Begovic as he has done some good things.”
There is no doubt that Bent is right when he says that Roberto has been ‘awful’ for the Hammers.
Indeed, he conceded 14 goals in just six league appearances for the club (Transfermarkt) and his performances were so poor that the man partly responsible for signing him, Mario Husillos, could lose his job as a result (Football Insider).
It is thought that the club are looking to get rid of the Spanish shot-stopper in January (The Guardian), which would create space for a new goalkeeper to join the club which may be where Begovic comes in.
The Bosnian would surely be a more capable deputy to Lukasz Fabianski. He is an experienced Premier League goalkeeper with 252 appearances in the league, keeping 61 clean sheets in that time (premierleague.com).
