West Ham United manager David Moyes has revealed exactly what he said to his players after they were beaten 3-2 by league leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night.
The Hammers produced a dogged display against the Reds and were even 2-1 up at one point before ultimately falling to defeat (BBC Sport).
On paper, the defeat at Anfield extends West Ham’s poor run of form – indeed they have not won any of their last six Premier League matches (Transfermarkt) and consequently sit in the relegation zone with just 11 games left to play (BBC Sport).
However, Moyes doesn’t think that the result at Anfield will have any bearing on their fate this season., and he has revealed that he told his players after the game that the important fixtures are now ahead of them, against teams they are considered to have a better chance of beating.
“I have just said [to the players] tonight wasn’t a big game, neither was Man City. The big games start now so the players have been told that, the big games now begin,” said Moyes (via Football London).
Some fans may not like Moyes’ comments, perceiving it as negative because it suggests that he feels they didn’t have any chance of picking up any points from their last two games against Manchester City and Liverpool.
However, in fairness to the Scot, he is right on this. They were not expected to get anything at the Etihad or Anfield and those fixtures will not define their season. Indeed, they have some huge matches coming up against clubs nearer to them in the league table, in which they are considered to have a better chance of picking up points.
Next up for them are Southampton at home, which has to be one of the games they will think they can win despite the Saints’ good form of late, whilst they also still have to play the likes of Newcastle United, Burnley, Watford, Norwich City and Aston Villa (Transfermarkt). Ultimately, those are the games that they will need to accumulate points from if they are to avoid relegation.
