Our West Ham fans here in the Transfer Tavern are struggling with the idea Dimitri Payet wants to leave but, according to The Times, a potential replacement for the Frenchman has been lined up.
The former Marseille winger has undoubtedly been the star of the West Ham show, even if it has been split into two starkly opposite halves.
In the first half he was the jewel in the crown of the 2015/16 season in east London but this time he is painting a pretty decent picture of himself of being the arch-villain.
It’s come as a real kick in the teeth to the Hammers who have had a dire year but it appears they’re working quickly to bring in a replacement.
According to the report, Lyon’s Clement Grenier is being eyed as a potential replacement for Payet if and when he leaves.
Grenier is a talented attacking midfielder who is coming into his prime and so if West Ham can get a good fee for Payet they may be able to do some tidy business.
It remains to be seen how it’s all resolved, though, and our landlord reckons it’s not going to be straight-forward at all.
