West Ham: Fans fuming with ex-players urging them to get behind the board

Plenty of West Ham United supporters have admitted on social media that they are fed up of being told by former players to back everyone at the club, including the board.
There is currently a major disconnect between the club’s fanbase and owners David Gold and David Sullivan. Indeed, there are even plans for supporters to protest against them in a televised game against Liverpool at Anfield later in the month and then again the week after at the London Stadium (The Telegraph).
Of course, that relationship isn’t being helped by events on the pitch, with David Moyes’ side currently languishing in the bottom three with just 13 games of the season remaining (BBC Sport).
However, several former Hammers players have come out in the media and urged the supporters to stop their protests and back the board, as well as the team. Steve Lomas was among them, telling The Sun: “Always be careful what you wish for. I’m sure David Gold and David Sullivan will admit they’ve made mistakes but I don’t think it’s out of malice. They don’t want the club struggling and anybody who thinks they do is an idiot.”
Paul Konchesky shared a similar message on talkSPORT, saying: “They [the fans] need to get behind them [the owners]. They’re at West Ham and they’ve put their money in, so we need to back everyone.”
However, loads of West Ham fans have been left frustrated by these comments and have taken to Twitter to express their opinions. Here is what some had to say…
I’m a tad fed up with ex players telling me to get behind the team.
What do they think I’ve been doing for the ast 50 years?
I would never protest during a game and all the evidence suggests I’m in the majority.— Dave Rice (@ricey63) February 14, 2020
absolutely spot on, i’m absolutely sick of hearing ex players with coming out with the same old rhetoric. drop me out

How about some of the current players getting behind the fans for a change and actually putting a shift in

Well said. A few are employed by the club. Filling the ground every home game is getting behind team.

Well said @ricey63 . How many of them were even born when thee and me started supporting!

Especially when 99% of former players were just employees of the club for a period of time. Not fans but employees. They might have enjoyed their time at whu. But its not in their blood

Orchestrated PR on the PL owners favourite talkshow @JimWhite and @LeeClayton_ the hammer. Nevin saying the players are buzzing on the West Ham website and @konch3 saying it’s affecting them. Make their minds up. Sad that they resort to this. I’ll support the team not the regime
