What else needs to be said about Gary Medel?
The Chilean international is the embodiment of football’s darker arts with his short and stubby frame, and his determination to win every loose ball in any way possible has earned him the nickname ‘El Pitbull’ over the course of his career via ESPN, and now at age 31, Medel could be set for a return to the Premier League with West Ham.
According to Milliyet via Sport Witness, Medel and his family want to return to England and that West Ham are the frontrunners for the Besiktas man, with the report stating that Manuel Pellegrini tried to sign the defensive midfielder last summer, and although the Chilean’s time in the Prem last time out wasn’t too successful with Cardiff City being relegated, the defensive unit could be a coup for the Hammers.
The Chilean played over 1,000 minutes less than the Hammers duo yet still managed more tackles per 90 than Diop at 2.2 to 2.1 as well as more clearances than Rice at 2.5 to 1.6. Medel also averaged a higher pass completion rate than both players at 88.7, as well as averaging more passes per game than the West Ham youngsters at 52.4 passes per game.
Medel is a player who can be of use to West Ham on multiple areas of the pitch. Although he is primarily a defensive midfielder based on his starting positions for Besiktas last season via Transfermarkt, the 31-year-old can play at centre-back, a position he normally takes up for Chile on the international stage.
A useful player in a number of positions, he could prove to be a helpful squad option if he does indeed return to these shores.
West Ham fans, would Medel be a good signing? Let us know!
