West Ham United could make a move for Preston North End goalkeeper Declan Rudd in this transfer window, that is according to a report from Football Insider.
The shot-stopper has been an ever-present for the Lilywhites this season, starting in all 27 of their Championship matches to date (Transfermarkt).
Signing a goalkeeper appears to be a priority for the Hammers this month and their search has perhaps intensified after Lukasz Fabianski limped off injured in their game against Sheffield United on Friday.
They do have two other goalkeepers at the club, but neither are really first-team material. Roberto Jimenez had his chance between the sticks earlier in the season and was frankly awful, conceding 16 times in just seven starts (Transfermarkt) and having a save percentage of just 68% (SofaScore).
David Martin is their other option and whilst he has done a little better, keeping clean sheets against Chelsea and Southampton (Transfermarkt), he did make a key error which led to Sheffield United’s winner at Bramall Lane recently (Sky Sports).
The Hammers have been linked with a move for Darren Randolph, but that transfer has been thrown into doubt after issues with his medical have held it up (Sky Sports). That could mean that they turn their attention elsewhere, and Football Insider report that they could make a £750,000 bid for Rudd whose contract is set to expire in the summer.
If the Hammers do choose to sign Rudd then it could be a poor choice on their part when you consider his statistics for this season.
Indeed the 28-year-old saves just 65% of shots against him on average per game (SofaScore), which is a worse ratio than Roberto and he is playing in a weaker league than the Spaniard. Added to that, he has made one error which has led to a goal against Preston this season, whilst also giving away two penalties.
Whilst £750,000 isn’t a hefty fee for a Premier League club, they need to get someone capable in given Fabianski’s injury problems. After all, West Ham are in serious danger of being relegated this season as they currently sit just one point clear of the drop zone (BBC Sport).
Signing a capable goalkeeper to step in for Fabianski could well prove the difference between staying up and going down and given his stats, they may be wise at looking at alternatives to Rudd.
