With 2019 now heading into July, it now marks the beginning of free agents in football seeking for a new permanent home before the start of the new season, and one name has already caught the eye of a few sides.
Former Chelsea captain Gary Cahill enters the summer transfer window as one of the most sought after free agents in English football, and according to 90min, West Ham are one of the clubs interested in the two-time Premier League winning defender, with Arsenal and Crystal Palace also interested in the 33-year-old.
With only three fit centre-backs to call upon on last season as club captain Winston Reid remained out of first-team action for the year due to injury, bringing in an experienced player like Cahill on a free might make sense, in theory. However, with the former Blues defender playing just 22 minutes of Premier League football last season, signing the veteran centre-back will be a risk for West Ham giving his lack of game time over the past 12 months.
Indeed, as West Ham aim to shift a large amount of money from their wage bill with Football Fan Cast reporting that the club are willing to take a financial hit on Javier Hernandez to get his £140,000-a-week contract off the payroll, Cahill could prove to be as financially taxing as the Mexican striker.
According to Spotrac, the former England international was picking up £100,000-a-week during his final season at west London, £30,000-a-week more than what both Angelo Ogbonna and Winston Reid earn at the Hammers via Spotrac as well.
West Ham have done well this summer to offload big-earners at the club such as Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez, but if the Hammers are to reinvest in another big-name such as Cahill, the Hammers need to be sure they can get the best out of him if they do indeed pursue a deal.
West Ham fans, would you take Cahill this summer? Let us know!
