The Maxi Gomez to West Ham United rumour continues to run and run.
The Celta Vigo striker has been reported by the Guardian as far back as January as a player West Ham are interested in, with that initial report stating that the Hammers were willing to pay Gomez’s £43.5 million release clause, and since then the story has taken another positive turn.
Sky Sports News now report that the Uruguayan international is keen on a move to the London Stadium as a proposed move to Valencia has been stalled due to the La Liga side’s lack of funds, paving the way for West Ham to sign the man they have wanted for so long.
It’s been something of an exodus this summer when it comes to West Ham’s strikers.
Andy Carroll ended a seven-year stint in east London as the English attacker was released on a free, Lucas Perez returned to Spain after just one season in east London, and both Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez have both been reported by BBC Sport and ESPN respectively as players who could also be on the way out this transfer window, and Gomez’s numbers from last season showed that Manuel Pellegrini might be doing the right thing clearing out the squad.
Comparing the Celta Vigo attacker to the two strikers who played the most first-team football for West Ham last season, Arnautovic and Hernandez, from stats from WhoScored, it’s easy to see that Gomez excels at both impacting the game and doing more than the Hammers duo.
The 22-year-old scored more goals and registered more assists than both West Ham strikers with 13 goals and 5 assists compared to Arnautovic’s 10 goals and 4 assists and Hernandez’s 7 goals 1 assist as well as averaging more shots per game than the West Ham duo at 2.3 to 2.2 and 1.5.
Gomez also won more fouls per game at 1.9 to 0.4 and 1.4, as well as creating more key passes per game than Hernandez with 0.9 compared to the Mexican’s 0.2.
With Pellegrini seemingly keen on giving West Ham’s attacking options a clear overhaul, Gomez will be the ideal player to bring in given how much of an improvement the South American striker is over the likes of Arnautovic and Hernandez.
