West Ham United and Nathaniel Clyne would be a “perfect match” according to former Leeds United and Coventry City striker Noel Whelan (via Football Insider).
Clyne has spent this season recovering from an ACL injury at Liverpool, but a report from Sky Sports in December suggested that he had stepped up his recovery and could move away from Anfield this month.
His contract is set to expire in the summer anyway and he is no longer a first choice for Jurgen Klopp following the rise to prominence of Trent Alexander-Arnold. West Ham could perhaps be in the market for a right-back after Ryan Fredericks was ruled out for several weeks with an injury and according to The Guardian, Clyne is a target of theirs.
Whelan believes that Clyne would be an ideal signing for the Hammers. When discussing the potential move with Football Insider, he said: “Yeah, look Nathaniel Clyne was fantastic when he was at Southampton.
“He did okay at Liverpool, not hit the heights he should have done, but you know there’s a player in him. He’s been hampered with injuries, but yeah this seems the perfect match for player and club if he can stay fit and get himself right.
“Moyes could have a really good player on his hands, and with Fredericks and Clyne there, two fantastic players and good options.”
Whelan has a point here, if Clyne can remain injury free then he would be a solid addition for West Ham. He is a proven Premier League right-back who has played 185 times at that level for Liverpool, Southampton and AFC Bournemouth (Transfermarkt).
When fully fit he is an excellent player, indeed he has been capped by England on 14 occasions (Transfermarkt). Added to that, he is also still at a good age as he is just 28-years-old, so he should still have some years left at his top level. Pablo Zabaleta, who turns 35 on January 16th, is the only fit right-back that the Hammers currently have. So adding Clyne would bolster competition for places in that area and add more experience and quality.
