Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes that West Ham United’s Winston Reid needs to leave the club for the good of his career.
It was thought that the New Zealand international would leave east London in the January transfer window and a move to the United States looked on the cards. However, according to manager David Moyes, the club he was in line to join will not now be signing him (via football.london).
He is therefore still at the Hammers but, having fallen out of favour, Whelan believes that it would be best for both the player and the club if he were to move on as soon as possible. Speaking about Reid’s future, Whelan told Football Insider: “He’s had a lengthy spell out. He needs to get back playing.
“But it might be a case that it’s good for player and club because they might get him off the books. They might not want to keep him. We don’t know how important he is to West Ham, but he needs be playing football.
“If he’s not going to be in the reckoning then he needs to go out. There’s no point sitting on a bench or playing U23 games – you want to be playing competitive football.”
Did West Ham make a mistake in selling Cheikhou Kouyaté?
Whelan certainly has a point here. Reid is still just 31 years old and you would think he still has a few years of his career left, but he needs to be playing regularly. After picking up a serious knee injury which ruled him out of the entire of the 2018/19 campaign (Transfermarkt), the 25-time New Zealand international has failed to break back into the first team at West Ham.
Indeed he hasn’t featured at all for the first team in any competition this season and he has only been named on the bench for three of their 25 Premier League fixtures (Transfermarkt).
With Angelo Ogbonna, Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena all ahead of him in the pecking order, he just isn’t going to get the minutes he needs at the London Stadium. Therefore, the defender needs to move on to pastures new at the earliest opportunity for the sake of his career.
