Former England international Paul Robinson believes West Ham United should drop Manuel Lanzini from the team as he isn’t performing well enough.
The Argentinian was one of the top players at the Hammers, and in his first three seasons with the club, he scored 19 goals and provided 11 assists (Transfermarkt). However, he then suffered a cruciate ligament rupture which forced him to miss the majority of last term (Transfermarkt).
He has returned to action this season and has managed to make 19 Premier League appearances (Transfermarkt), but he has struggled to replicate his form from a couple of years ago. As a result of that, combined with the fact that West Ham are really struggling at the moment and have dropped into the bottom three (BBC Sport), Robinson believes that he needs to be taken out of the team.
When asked about the 26-year-old and whether or not he should be dropped, Robinson told Football Insider: “I don’t think in their position they can afford luxury players, luxury players who flit in and out of games.
Would you take Rafael Benitez at West Ham?
“David Moyes needs 11 players on the pitch who are willing to work for the shirt, work for him and do everything they can to get a result.
“If players, let’s say luxury players, aren’t performing at the level you expect them (to), you can’t afford to carry passengers.”
In fairness to Robinson he probably has a point here. Whilst Lanzini used to be a key player for the Hammers, this season he simply hasn’t done enough.
Indeed. he has failed to score a single goal in his 19 league appearances and added to that he has just three assists, only one of which has come in his last 15 appearances (Transfermarkt). Added to that, he has created just two big chances all season whilst also averaging 0.7 shots per game (SofaScore).
Given that West Ham are now firmly in a relegation battle, they cannot afford to carry players at the moment and unfortunately for Lanzini he is one of the players who isn’t really contributing. It may be that David Moyes needs to drop the Argentine and give someone else a chance to try and help them survive the drop.
