According to a recent report from El Correo, midfielder Ander Herrera could be set for a move away in the near future. The 29-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League giants Manchester United and has done so since leaving Athletic Bilbao back in 2014, although he has found regular first team football hard to come by under Jose Mourinho this season.

And with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign, the Spain international may well be on his way out of Old Trafford, with Bilbao reportedly keen on a reunion, and these reports should be of interest to West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini, who would certainly bolster his midfield options with the addition of the £27 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt), at the same time giving Jack Wilshere something else to think about at the London Stadium.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the Hammers spent big during the summer in a bid to finally push up the Premier League table following their move to the London Stadium, yet one somewhat surprising deal saw Cheikhou Kouyate leave the club for Crystal Palace.

And that exit has left the East London outfit somewhat short in the central midfield department, and while the likes of Mark Noble, Pedro Obiang, and Declan Rice have performed well in that area recently, one wonders how long they can keep it up.

And with Jack Wilshere having undergone ankle surgery in recent times, it doesn’t look like he’ll be around anytime soon in a bid to further bolster that area.

However, the fact that they lost all four matches in which he started surely isn’t a coincidence, as the Hammers' form has certainly improved without the England international in the middle of the park - messrs Noble, Obiang, and Rice appear to have stumbled upon something that works in that area, and it doesn't include former Arsenal star Wilshere.

As such, it looks like the midfielder is already facing something of a battle getting back into the side and thus back to his best in East London, and with Herrera out of contract at the end of the campaign, a cut-price deal in January or indeed a free come the summer may well be of interest to Pellegrini in a bid to give Wilshere even more to think about regards getting back in the team.

The two-times Spain international has appeared 164 times for United in the last four years or so but only has one Premier League start to his name this time round, and while injury has played a small part in his first team struggles, it’s pretty damning that he can’t get into the Red Devils midfield despite their wretched run of recent form.

However, one mustn’t forget that Herrera has indeed produced the goods on numerous occasions during his time at Old Trafford to underline the fact that he is a hugely accomplished midfielder at Premier League level, who certainly isn’t afraid to get stuck in and take it to the opposition.

And while the Hammers look pretty well-stocked in most other areas of their squad, there are likely to be some concerns regarding the strength and depth of the midfield department, especially given Wilshere's latest injury setback - Herrera’s arrival would help address that particular concern.

And with the Spaniard out of contract at the end of the campaign, and a new deal seemingly unlikely, West Ham should try and keep him in the Premier League by luring the 29-year-old to East London, in a move which would pile the pressure even further on summer signing Wilshere.
