Albian Ajeti is set to make his West Ham United debut against Newport County in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, as reported by football.london.
The Switzerland international signed for the Hammers for £8m from FC Basel during the summer, but is yet to get on the pitch, with Sebastien Haller and Javier Hernandez having taken the game time upfront so far.
Speaking ahead of the game against Newport, Manuel Pellegrini said: “I am sure that Ajeti will play, he deserves that opportunity, he is doing very well during training sessions.”
Ajeti played a total of 43 appearances for Basel last season, scoring 21 goals and assisting another 11, as per Transfermarkt.
What will be of interest to Hammers fans ahead of this game is his record in the Swiss Cup, which is very encouraging, as he got five goals and three assists in five games as Basel won the tournament.
Ajeti’s two best games have to be the quarter-final, where he got a goal and two assists as his side beat FC Sion, and the final, where he scored the opener to get his team on the road to a 2-1 win against FC Thun.
This is certainly a good decision from Pellegrini, as it seems unlikely Ajeti will get much game time in the league with Haller as the main man.
While last season’s FA Cup loss against AFC Wimbledon has shown lower league teams can’t be underestimated, high level back-up players such as the Switzerland international should certainly be used for this encounter.
