Former Premier League defender Alex Bruce has been speaking about West Ham centre-back Issa Diop after various reports have linked the player with a move away from the East London club in the summer.
Diop has been linked to Manchester United, via Sky Sports, and more recently to Arsenal, via The Mirror. Impressively, he has been one of the first names on the teamsheet since his move from Toulouse in July 2018, per Transfermarkt, as he has made 53 appearances in the league already.
When talking to Football Insider about the possibility of selling the French defender, Bruce said, “They have got very wealthy owners, they’re not the kind of people who need to sell, I don’t imagine, so it would be interesting if they dig their heels in.
“West Ham need to keep hold of their best players, they need to build a team and I’m sure he would be around that, one of the players Moyes would want to keep. It all depends on what Moyes has got.
“If he needs to bring in money to spend, then you might look at it and it is an astronomical sum of money and the boy might want to go if one of the big clubs, like Manchester United, come calling for him.”
It’s hard to disagree with Bruce here, Diop is only 23 years old, per Transfermarkt, highlighting that he has many years ahead of him to become an even better player than the one top sides already want.
If the Hammers can stay up, they can place a huge asking price on the player, who boasts an impressive 5.3 clearances per game, and wins 2.7 aerial duels per game, via Sofascore. With that in mind, perhaps selling him to help build something in East London could be a good idea, given the fact Declan Rice can also operate as a central defender.
While he’s clearly been an impressive player for the club, selling him could potentially raise funds for what needs to be a new era for West Ham, who have struggled badly this season.
