West Ham United remain interested in Steaua Bucharest’s Florinel Coman and sent a scout to watch him in a recent fixture (sport.ro).
However, it seems that they could face a battle for 21-year-old’s signature with MLS outfit Orlando City having made a move to bring him in according to Digisport.
Back in October, the Daily Mail suggested that the Hammers were interested in the Romanian and had joined Manchester City in a race to sign him.
It seems that they still remain keen on the winger and as already mentioned, they reportedly watched him as Steaua Bucharest lost 2-1 against local rivals Dinamo Bucharest on Sunday. However, they now face serious competition from Orlando City it seems with Digisport reporting that the American outfit have offered €7 million (£5.8 million) for 40% of Coman’s economic rights, although that was rejected by Steaua owner Gigi Becali.
Instead, Becali is demanding a fee of €15 million (£12.5 million) for the youngster who it seems is gaining plenty of admirers ahead of the summer transfer window.
It seems that West Ham could face a serious fight to secure the signature of Coman, who they are almost certainly still interested in having sent a scout to watch him earlier this week.
He looks like he would be a good signing when you consider his stats from the current season, indeed he has scored 11 goals and provided nine assists in just 22 Liga 1 appearances this term despite predominantly playing out wide (Transfermarkt).
However, one issue for David Moyes’ side could be that they are unlikely to make any formal bids until the end of the season when they know exactly which division they will be playing in. After 25 games they sit in the bottom three in the Premier League (BBC Sport) and therefore could be relegated to the Championship.
Their transfer plans will depend on whether they are in the first or second tier in the 2020/21 campaign and if Orlando meet Becali’s £12.5 million valuation between now and the summer then a deal could get done before West Ham have a chance to make a bid of their own.
