Former Leeds United and Manchester City full-back Danny Mills does not understand the latest reports from Don Balon which are linking West Ham defender Issa Diop with a move to La Liga side Atletico Madrid.
The French centre-back signed from Toulouse in the summer of 2018 for £22.50 million, per Transfermarkt, and since his move he has been linked to multiple clubs, including Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, per The Daily Mail.
When speaking to Football Insider about the most recent rumours linking Diop to Atletico, who are thought to be willing to pay £37.5 million for the player, Mills said: “Maybe he has got potential but they must be seeing something that I do not see week in week out,”
“Perhaps with the right level of coaching, he can be turned into something.
“It has been a difficult season for West Ham and they have conceded a lot of goals. In a struggling side I cannot say I look at him and think, ‘Yes, I definitely want that player in my team week in, week out.”
It’s hard to disagree with Mills here, as Diop makes less tackles on average per game (1), when you compare him with current Atletico centre-back’s Jose Gimenez and Stefan Savic, per WhoScored.
Added to that, he has also been part of a West Ham defence which has conceded 50 goals in the Premier League this season, per SofaScore, which is the third worst in the competition. The Irons have managed to keep just three clean sheets in the 23 league games that Diop has featured in and he has made one error leading to a shot, one error leading to a goal and given away two penalties this term (SofaScore).
On the basis of his below-par defensive stats for this season, it would certainly be an interesting transfer if he did go to a team in Atletico Madrid which is well known for being solid at the back.
