Former England striker Darren Bent remains unconvinced that West Ham defender Ryan Fredericks is good enough to play at Premier League level.
The right-back joined the Hammers from Fulham back in 2018 as one of Manuel Pellegrini’s first signings initially struggled for game time at the London Stadium, starting just 12 Premier League matches in the 2018/19 campaign (Transfermarkt).
However, he has been a regular this season and has jumped ahead of Pablo Zabaleta in the pecking order, starting 13 of their 15 Premier League fixtures so far (Transfermarkt).
Despite the increased game time, Bent still isn’t sure about the 27-year-old and is undecided on whether or not he is of Premier League quality.
Speaking to Football Insider, the ex-Sunderland striker said: “The jury is still out. He’s got all the pace, he’s got all the make-up for it but defensively, he finds himself wanting an awful lot out of position.
“I think the jury’s still out. He’s got all the capabilities of being an adequate full-back in the Premier League but it’s up to himself now and working on his game, working on his defensive responsibilities.”
Bent certainly has a point when it comes to Fredericks, who has hardly set the world alight in the Premier League since joining West Ham.
The former Derby striker points out that whilst he does have some good attributes, he can often be found wanting defensively and he is correct on the front.
Indeed, the right-back has been part of a defence which has conceded 21 goals in the 13 league games in which he has started (Transfermarkt) and he is definitely partially at fault for that record.
Looking deeper into the stats, Fredericks loses possession on average 13.8 times per game whilst also winning just 51.2% of his aerial duels and 56.6% of ground duels (SofaScore).
If he wants to continue to be a top-flight player, then he certainly needs to improve his game, particularly in a defensive sense in the months ahead.
